The film is set after the Universe Survival Saga, following Goku and Vegeta as they encounter the powerful Saiyan Broly. It chronicles the history of the Saiyans and the background of these three Saiyans with different destinies connected to the turbulent period of their race. In Age 732, King Vegeta exiles the infant Broly to the planetoid Vampa after learning his power level exceeds that of his own son Vegeta. Broly's father Paragus rescues him but becomes stranded on Vampa, raising his son to exact revenge on King Vegeta. Forty-three years later, Broly and Paragus are rescued by Frieza Force soldiers Cheelai and Lemo and enlisted to fight Goku and Vegeta. After Frieza kills Paragus to awaken Broly's Super Saiyan powers, Goku and Vegeta perform the Fusion Dance to become Gogeta, who defeats Broly. Cheelai and Lemo use the Dragon Balls to transport Broly back to Vampa, and Goku later visits to offer training.

Dragon Ball Super: Broly is significant as the first Dragon Ball Super film and the first to bring the popular non-canon character Broly into the official continuity, reworking his origin while maintaining his classic image. The film was well received by critics for its animation, fight sequences, and art style, and was a box office success, grossing over $124 million worldwide. It became the highest-grossing Dragon Ball film ever, the highest-grossing anime film of 2018, and at the time the third highest-grossing anime film in the United States and Canada and the twelfth highest-grossing anime film of all time.
